Vaser® is an Ultrasound assisted liposuction used to reduce stubborn areas of fat and precisely sculpt areas of the body with less bruising and downtime than with conventional surgical liposuction. Patients who say they would never have considered traditional liposuction are now finding that the Vaser® Lipo procedure is a gentle alternative for body shaping.
How does it work?
Vaser® uses pulsed ultrasound energy to emulsify and ‘liquefy’ fat, while causing the least damage to surrounding tissues allowing the fat to be removed easily and less aggressively. Vaser® can achieve precision body sculpting improving aesthetic contours by eliminating areas of fat that have otherwise been resistant to exercise and dieting. Vaser® produces superior results, while at the same time being a minimally invasive, low-impact procedure.
Traditional liposuction techniques involve the removal of unwanted fat via a hollow cannula (tube) with the assistance of vacuum suction and the forceful use of the surgeon’s arm. The unique ultra sound energy used with the Vaser® system means that a much finer cannula can be used and the fat removal is far less traumatic.
Who is Vaser® suitable for?
Vaser® is suitable for men and women and there may be many reasons for wanting this procedure. Some of us have areas of stubborn fat that just can’t be shifted through diet and exercise. Others want more drastic fat removal for re shaping and contouring. Post pregnancy ‘mummy tummy’s’ can be treated along with ‘man boobs’ and ‘love handles’. This system is ideal small and large areas and brings about skin tightening which really improves the appearance of normally difficult to treat areas such as arms, double chins and knees.
How does Vaser® differ from conventional Liposuction?
This innovative technique can distinguish between healthy tissue, nerves and blood vessels from the targeted fat to be removed. The targeted fat can therefore be removed whilst preserving healthy tissue and allowing for rapid healing which traditional Lipo is unable to achieve. Recovery is quicker and there is minimal scarring making this an ideal alternative.
How much fat can be removed with Vaser®?
There are limits to how much fatty tissue can be safely taken from the body. The amount of fat removed will be dependent on several factors and this will be discussed with you at your consultation. Please keep in mind that this procedure is not intended as a weight loss solution. The goal is to create a slimmer and more defined silhouette.
How soon will I see my results?
Results can vary with every individual, the amount of fat removed, the number of areas treated, and so on. Though many have reported they see results immediately after the procedure, it may take up to 3-6 months to see a final result. It is important that you establish realistic expectations through discussion during your consultation.
Before VASER After VASER
Can I gain weight after having Vaser®?
After having Vaser®, should you experience weight gain or loss, it will tend to be proportionately distributed over your entire body. Once you have fat removed with Vaser® it is gone, however maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and exercise is required in order for the fat not return or migrate. Normal ageing changes can also be expected.
What can I expect during the Vaser® treatment?
The procedure is performed under local anesthetic with an option of additional oral sedation.
During the procedure a saline solution containing anesthetic is introduced into the area to be treated via a small incision. This anesthetic will numb the area and also shrink blood vessels to reduce bleeding. This solution is used to “wet” the treatment area and loosen up the fatty tissue ready for the ultrasound delivery. It also makes it easier to remove all the emulsified fat in a single solution once treatment is complete.
Through the same incision as the anesthetic the Ultrasound is then delivered via a thin probe (2.2 - 3.7mm in diameter) with special patented grooves along its sides, which means that the ultrasound energy can be emitted from all sides of the probe, as well as from the tip, allowing the Doctor the ability to sculpt delicate areas such as the arms, inner thighs, neck and chin more precisely.
The effect of delivering the ultrasound in this dispersed way is that it doesn’t damage any other structures within the area, such as blood vessels or nerves, which is an advantage it has over more traditional methods of liposuction.
Once liquefied and again through the same incision, the fat is then removed using low level suction meaning that surrounding tissue is largely undisturbed and bruising is kept to a minimum.
The incisions are then closed using a single stitch which means minimal scarring. You are then asked to wear a compression garment for 4-6 weeks.
Side effects & risks
As the mechanical effort is less than with traditional liposuction, bruising and pain is minimised, meaning a faster recovery time. You should still expect bruising, swelling and soreness for a few days, but recovery is much quicker than with conventional liposuction. Initially you should expect some fluid drainage from the incision points. You will also be given a compression garment to wear over the treated area for approximately 2 – 6 weeks depending on the area(s) treated and the amount of fat removed.
Possible side effects include unevenness, persistent swelling, or lumpiness in the area treated, and skin discolouration or scarring at the incision points.
Other risks associated with surgery include reactions to anaesthetic, haematomas (collections of blood under the skin), infection and nerve damage.
How much does Vaser® lipo cost?
Vaser® liposuction does not require an overnight stay in hospital and is treated on a day case basis so the costs can be reduced significantly compared to conventional liposuction. Vaser lipo costs depend on the number of areas to be treated and the volume of fat to be removed.
What should I expect after my Vaser® Liposuction procedure?
As only local anaesthetic is used, patients return home after the procedure, and can typically return to their normal lives within a few days. On average swelling and bruising usually subside after two weeks, however sometimes it can take more time.
Is Vaser® Liposuction Painful?
Most patients undergo a Vaser® procedure with little or no pain with only a local anaesthetic, and when needed, additional sedation can be offered for patients particularly sensitive. Post-operative discomfort is usually limited to swelling and bruising, which most patients find doesn't interfere with their daily activities.
