Over time your skin loses its full, firm, youthful appearance because of the natural ageing process. From an early age the amount of collagen your body produces slows down. Collagen is the substance your body produces to give your skin a firm and youthful appearance. You also lose fat tissue which maintains the fullness of your face so your face becomes thin and narrow, making you look older.
Sculptra helps your skin to replace lost collagen to smooth lines and wrinkles, helping you to look younger naturally.
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is an injectable treatment that stimulates the body’s own collagen to smooth out lines and wrinkles. Sculptra also restores lost facial volume gradually giving you a fuller, younger looking face.
Suitable areas for Sculptra
Unlike some dermal fillers which will only treat individual lines and wrinkles Sculptra actually treates most areas of your face that my be concerning you e.g.
• Lines, wrinkles and folds • Lines between your nose and mouth (nasolabial folds) • Wrinkles in the cheeks and chin • Sunken cheeks • Recessed temple area • Jowls
Sculptraworks gradually to give a natural effect. Usually 2-3 sessions are required and results should be noticeable after approximately 6 weeks (however, in some patients this may take longer or require more treatments).
Clinical studies have shown that the results of Sculptra can last for up to 2 years after your last treatment, significantly longer than many other injectable treatments.
No allergy testing is required before treatment.
The main ingredient of Sculptra has been used in medicine for over 25 years and has a good safety profile.
Sculptra is marketed by Sanofi-Aventis, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies.
Why is Sculptra different?
Sculptra is a collagen stimulator that reduces lines, wrinkles and folds and replaces the fullness of the face that has been lost by the ageing process. Sculptra works by stimulating your own facial collagen production to replenish your skin, providing a natural looking result. It works gradually to restore what has been lost and once your treatment plan is complete, the results can last for up to 2 years after your last treatment.
Does the treatment hurt?
As with all injections you will feel some discomfort. A topical anaesthetic is applied prior to the treatment.
What must I bear in mind after the treatment?
For optimum effects it is important to massage the treated area twice daily for one month. The Doctor will advise you on specific aftercare instructions. You will be swollen following the procedure but this will subside within 24 hours. The product itself contains a small amount of local anaesthetic which will help with any discomfort.
Are there any side effects?
The most common side effect with the use of Sculptra includes tenderness, redness, bruising or swelling at the site of injection. These side effects generally resolve in 2-6 days. One possible delayed side effect with Sculptra can be small bumps under the skin in the treated area. These small bumps may not be visible, and you may notice them only when you press in the treated skin. Visible bumps, sometimes associated with redness or colour change to the treated area, have also been reported. As with all procedures that involve in injection through the skin, there is risk of infection.
Are the results from Sculptra immediate?
At your first treatment visit, it may appear that Sculptra worked immediately because of the swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute Sculptra. In a few days, when the swelling goes down and the water is absorbed by your body you may look as you did before your treatment. Sculptra takes time to work, results should be noticeable after approximately 6 weeks. Generally, 2 to 3 treatments sessions may be necessary to obtain the required results. However, in contrast to some other treatments which require refresher sessions, after the end of your Sculptra programme the results can last for up to 2 years after your last treatment (results can differ depending on age, treatment required and the type of procedures used).
